HARD WATER AND ECZEMA

A softer answer for sensitive skin.

Hard water doesn’t cause eczema — but research increasingly links it to flare-ups. For families managing eczema in a hard-water area like Oxfordshire, a softener is one of the few interventions that addresses the cause, not the symptom.

THE SCIENCE

Why hard water matters
for eczema-prone skin.

The current research links three mechanisms.

Skin barrier disruption

Calcium and magnesium in hard water bind to surfactants in soaps and shampoos, leaving microscopic deposits on the skin. Research published in The Journal of Investigative Dermatology (2017) linked hard water to skin barrier weakness in infants.

Increased soap residue

You use more soap and detergent in hard water — and more of it stays on the skin. Higher residue means more potential for irritation, particularly for skin already prone to flare-ups.

Lower pH compatibility

Hard water tends to be more alkaline. Healthy skin sits around pH 5.5. Repeatedly washing with alkaline water can shift the skin's natural acidity.

A water softener doesn’t replace any medical advice. Speak to your GP, dermatologist or paediatrician about specific concerns.

CUSTOMER STORIES

What customers tell us.

These are paraphrased from customer reviews and post-install conversations. They are not medical claims.

Hannah W.
Abingdon · Installed January 2026
"My daughter's eczema flares had been a daily battle for two years. Three months after the install, the flares are much less frequent and visibly less angry. The salt subscription means we never have to think about it."
James R.
Witney · Installed February 2026
"I'd tried emollients, ointments, prescription steroids — all helpful but managing symptoms, not the cause. Soft water has materially reduced how often I flare up."
Sophie K.
Banbury · Installed November 2025
"Bath time was the worst part of our day. Now it's normal. That alone justified the £47/month for us."

PRACTICAL DIFFERENCES

What you'll notice at home.

Less soap, less rinse

You'll use roughly half the soap, shampoo and washing detergent you do now. Less residue means cleaner rinsing.

No more limescale in the bath

The tide-line on baths and shower screens disappears. So does the constant cleaning regime that goes with it.

Softer towels

Hard water deposits make towels rough over time. Soft water restores them.

The kitchen tap stays unsoftened

For drinking water — we always leave the cold kitchen tap on the original mains supply.
